Spring types

Strip, leaf, leaf-spring, and flat spiral springs

Flat springs gain flexibility mainly through bending a strip or sheet, rather than twisting a round-wire helix.

Three flat spring forms: curved leaf, stacked leaf pack, and flat spiral.

Families and function

An elastic sheet, a leaf spring, and a flat spiral share strip-shaped material, but their geometry and supports produce different responses. They can provide contact, return force, retention, or motion storage in compact mechanisms.

Geometry and manufacture

Width, thickness, free length, support form, and load direction govern bending. Cutting, stamping, or forming may suit different parts; agree the route with the supplier. Round-wire helical equations do not directly apply.
