Materials and processes

Surfaces and treatments

Finishes, coatings, and surface processes should be selected with the material and environment.

Finish function

A treatment may address corrosion, friction, wear, cleaning, or appearance, but it can also change dimensions and surface condition. Confirm compatibility with base material, subsequent processing, temperature, and contact for the application.

Hydrogen caution

Some cleaning or coating processes can introduce hydrogen and increase embrittlement risk in certain high-strength steels. Risk depends on material and process; do not assume a generic bake removes it. Agree controls with the supplier and engineering.
